ATT and Yahoo 'buddy' up over VOIP and IM

VOIP companies and technologies usually face off against traditional telecommunications companies. So it may surprise some to see Yahoo getting cozy with AT&T. Old models versus the new.

And yet the whole arrangement appears very yin-yang in the way these two plan to complement each other. Yahoo provides the internet market penetration with Yahoo communities and users, and more importantly, Yahoo Messenger. AT&T provides the ability to tap into the physical phone lines.

The plan: Yahoo's AT&T branded Messenger will now allow you to not just call computer to computer, but with AT&T's help, call out to a regular phone. And vice versa.

Will this be a competitor to Skype? Too early to tell, but the game is afoot, and when players like AT&T line up on the start line, certainly interesting.
