Resource Expert Powers Up Geothermal Plays

"Most resources are depleting assets; they are no good once consumed. However, there are sources of renewal energy, and this area has been gaining attention because of environmental and global warming concerns, as well as fear about impending oil shortages," says Adrian Day.

The editor of The Global Stock Analyst explains, "Geothermal is truly environment-friendly (that is, it has a small footprint, has no residual waste, and is not a blight on the landscape), and unlike most green power, it is profitable."

In Reversal, Germany Now Wants IMF Involved in Greece Aid Plan

Thursday's key developments in "As The Eurozone Turns":

Investors should have known better. A couple days after European finance ministers adopted a bailout framework for debt-plagued Greece, a rift opened in the European Union after Germany signaled that International Monetary Fund assistance should be included in any package.

Michael Meister, financial affairs spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, said a Greece rescue "without the IMF would be a very daring experiment," Bloomberg News reported Thursday.

"Qualcomm (QCOM), a $63 billion San Diego-based company, has become that rare creature: a true technology franchise," says growth stock expert Stephen Leeb.

EU Is Not the United States of Europe

California has a huge deficit and will not be going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance. This is true of a dozen other states as well.

The European Union, which was established to compete with the economic clout of the United States, is looking like the European Dis-Union (EDU) -- currently "dissing" on the state of Greece. This EDU is a far cry from the good 'ol USA, which has plenty of economic and social strife of its own, but even under the most stressful times has demonstrated it takes care of its own.

ABB (ABB) and Shaw (SHAW): Industrial Gains

"Industrials stocks focus on the manufacturing, transport and construction of physical goods and heavy infrastructure," says Elliott Gue.

The contributing editor to Personal Finance explains, "The best in the sector share one key trait: powerful leverage to a global economic recovery led by growth in the emerging markets and renewed spending on basic infrastructure across the developed world. The S&P 500 Industrials has outperformed the broader market by 20% during the past year."

Before the Bell: Futures Mixed Ahead of Inflation, Employment Data

U.S. stock futures were mixed Thursday morning ahead of several key readings on employment and inflation due out this morning. However, renewed concerns over the European nations' support for Greece in its debt crisis weighed on markets.

Stocks closed higher on Wednesday, continuing the steady climb of the past few weeks. But if world markets are any indication, Thursday might open lower as Greece's Prime Minister George Papandreou said his country needs a firmer eurozone bailout plan. He warned his country would not be able to make planned deficit cuts unless it can borrow money cheaply. If it cannot get the euronations help, Greece may have to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund.

Nike Jumps Following Strong Earnings Report

Shares of athletic giant Nike, Inc. (NKE) are up over 3% in after hours trading after the company posted better than expected earnings for its fiscal third quarter this afternoon.

As we noted in our earnings preview last night, analysts had forecast earnings of $0.89 per share for the quarter. This marks the 11th straight quarter that Nike has been able to post better than expected quarterly earnings.

Blenders and Juicers Boost Deer Consumer Products (DEER)

"Deer Consumer Products (DEER) is a Chinese manufacturer of blenders and juicers and other small electronic countertop appliances for the likes of Target, Walmart, Black and Decker, Toastmaster, West Bend and a host of others, plus its own brands and an increasing number of domestic Chinese brands," notes Tom Bishop.

The small cap expert and editor of BI Research observes, "Don't be fooled by this mundane business just because almost all Americans already have a blender or juicer in the cupboard. In China and other emerging nations, few do.

Before the Bell: Futures Higher After Fed, Ahead of PPI

U.S. stock futures advanced Wednesday morning, in what would seem to be a continuation of Tuesday's gains following the Federal Reserve's statement about the economy and its policy. Investors will also sink their teeth on some inflation data.

U.S. stocks rose Tuesday, with the Dow industrials adding 0.4% and closing higher for a sixth straight time, the S&P 500 gaining 0.8% and finishing at a 17-month high, and the Nasdaq jumping 0.7%. The Federal Reserve, as expected, kept rates unchanged and said it would keep interest rates low for the foreseeable future. Also, Standard & Poor's rating agency said it would not necessarily downgrade Greece.

Greece Gets Financial Lifeline Pledge from EU

Tuesday's key developments in "As The Euro-Zone Turns":

European finance ministers adopted a bailout framework for debt-plagued Greece, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday.

The plan represents the first time since the euro's introduction in 1999 that euro-zone governments have prepared a back-up loan facility for a fiscally-strapped member state, and it occurs after Greek officials passed €4.8 billion, or $6.6 billion, in budget cuts.

Mining for Value in Silver Sector

"We have reinstated our buy recommendations for Silver Wheaton Corp. (SLW) and Pan American Silver Corp. (PAAS)," says Jack Adamo.

The editor of Insiders Plus explains, "First, we look at Pan American Silver; this is one the steadiest growers I've seen in any industry. It has more than tripled its silver production in the last 8 years. Its stock has trounced the S&P 500 over the last five, ten and twenty years.

Before the Bell: Futures Slightly Higher Ahead of Fed

U.S. stock futures advanced somewhat Tuesday as investors turn their attention to the Federal Reserve policy meeting with the upcoming decision on interest rates and the accompanying statement. Meanwhile, investors could sink their teeth on some housing data.

It became clear Monday, after the session closed with stocks little changed, that investors are waiting for the Fed. The Federal Open Market Committee decision is due at 2:15 p.m. Eastern. While the Fed is expected to keep interest rates unchanged near zero, it is the statement that will be in focus. As the economy is improving, the Fed will have to start tightening at some point -- hiking rates -- to combat inflation. The question for investors is when. So far, the Fed has promised to keep rates low for an "extended period." But many expect this language, at least, to change soon, which may pressure stocks lower.

EU, Greece Beginning to Sing the Same Tune on Restructuring Plan

Monday's key developments in "As The Euro-Zone Turns":

In a surprise, both European Union and Greek officials are starting to sing a similar restructuring tune, as Greece's budget deficit crisis extended into its second month. The EU said it is ready to propose a "framework" to help Greece overcome its debt crisis, Bloomberg News reported Monday. However, an initial package is not likely to include cash assistance.

Meanwhile, a Greek official said, "We are not looking for money, but for some support so that the spreads on our bonds become more logical," The Wall Street Journal reported Monday (subscription required).

Baidu to Gain from Google's China Search Exit

Baidu.com (BIDU - option chain) shares are rising today on reports that Google (GOOG) advertisers in China have been advised to switch to its rivals, including Baidu and Sohu.com (SOHU). This is on the heels of this weekend's report that Google will shut down its Chinese search engine rather than bow to the countries strict censorship rules. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on Baidu.

BIDU opened this morning at $570.48. So far today the stock has hit a low of $563.20 and a high of $628.50. As of 12:35, BIDU is trading at $581.05 up $30.81 (5.6%). The chart for BIDU looks neutral and S&P gives BIDU a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.

Chasing Value: Willis -- A Small Risk

Insurance companies are seeing more promise lately and one that showed up on my value screen was Willis Group Holdings (WSH) -- headquartered in London but listed on the NYSE. For starters, it is paying a higher than average yield of 3.31%; has a low PEG ratio of 0.99; and has a high ROE of 21.76.

This company often deals in very high risk propositions. You, however, will not be taking one because Willis, as a leading global insurance broker, not underwriter, specializes in reducing risk for entities in such fields as aerospace, construction, energy, health care, marine, mergers and acquisitions, and niche areas like fine art, jewelry, armored cars, racehorse breeding, and sabotage.
